1 - History
Born to a horse tribe in Nigeria on the west coast of Africa in the mid-1600's, Ekon was on the back of a horse soon after learning to walk. His village was peaceful and content, until the slave traders from Great Britain descended and kidnapped Ekon and his family and sent them on a slave ship to the New World.
Ekon was sold to a wealthy family in Massachusetts who lived on a horse farm of some 200 acres. Every second on that farm, separated from his family, was torture to Ekon. So, at night, after working 16-hour days in the fields, Ekon trained his body, knowing that when the chance to escape arose, he needed to be ready. Measuring over six feet tall and weighing over 200 pounds, Ekon is strong in hand-to-hand combat. But on the back of a horse, he is graceful, intimidating, and fierce.
In addition to his physical prowess and skilled horsemanship, Ekon trained his mind as well. He stole books from the main house on the farm, teaching himself English, French, and Spanish. Ekon knew that if he spoke his enemy's language, he could blend in among them. Years passed and Ekon waited for his opportunity to escape.
When Weetamoo and her tribe attacked the farm in retaliation for an attack on her people, Ekon saw finally got his chance. In the chaos of the raid, Ekon dressed in clothes he'd taken from the main house, hoping to pass himself off as a freed slave when he finally got free. Then, with war cries and flames piercing the night sky, Ekon stole the strongest horse in the stable and bolted.
Weetamoo saw this majestic horseman racing in the moonlight and followed. Ekon felt this woman chasing him and tried to lose her, but after miles of detours and shortcuts, Weetamoo was still on his trail. Ekon eventually stopped and let Weetamoo approach. A spark flashed between these two great horse people from completely different worlds. Thus, a long friendship was born, with Ekon and Weetamoo recognizing and respecting the riding abilities of the other.
The more these two strange companions learned about the other, the more they realized they were alike in many ways: outsiders in a world searching for a place to belong and somewhere to call home.
Eventually, they both sailed for Europe, realizing that the subjugation of the Native Americans and the enslavement of the African people was being financed by the Cardinal himself. They both vowed revenge against such evil.
